Protsahan Pa-Its Protsahan!

Her heart leapt with joy on hearing the news. Saki started dancing and would have even done a somersault or two if it were not for her mother’s disapproving look. She'd always wanted to help father with his field work like her brothers and bring home all those colorful goodies. She failed to understand why father kept saying that his workplace was not a territory for girls.
But that day!!! Saki was finally going to pick garbage with her rag-picker father! Kumar didn’t want to disappoint his stubborn child and secretly hoped she would get disgusted by the trash. She was meant to learn household chores like her sister and other slum girls.
Saki’s eyes widened as she scanned huge heaps of glittering waste. To her father’s dismay, the child fell in love with the place and found second home amongst the green bottles and shiny metal plates. For a week she continued to visit her new workplace and wondered why anyone wouldn't want all those wonderful objects! Anyway, she didn’t care as long as she could take some home!
One day, just as her eye caught some shiny object and she dug in to savor it, she was interrupted by another girl of her age and an older woman. The kid was from a new school that had opened up for girls and wanted Saki to come down and study with her. Now Saki was already upset about losing sight of the object she’d spotted and this talk about school annoyed her even more? With rage in her eyes, she ran away from them to find her father. She never went to school anyways. Her cousin Sweccha had left school because she thought it was easier to earn money for her family working in a household. Her father too never understood why girls had to go to school, when they would get married someday. His son of course was getting trained to be an electrician.
The teacher’s convincing notwithstanding, Saki and Kumar blatantly refused to entertain discussions about school. The teacher smiled and gave Saki a little card. Saki was stunned by it. It was so colorful and beautiful that she couldn’t take her eyes off the woman in the card. However, she went back to scooping the shiny object that had her attention minutes back only to end up with a deep wound in her hand! She yelped in pain and returned home.
That’s when Sweccha came to her rescue. She got Saki some fresh bandage, antiseptic to wash off the blood. She called it “First Aid”, something she’d learnt at the new school. Slowly, rag picking started turning monotonous and she acknowledged that it was only trash. Also, the shiny attractive objects always got her into trouble. Household chores also never interested her! That was when she decided to give school a chance!
Saki was nervous and sweaty on her first day to school. She went numb upon meeting so many people in a room full of colorful things. Her classmates greeted her and pulled her towards their desks. She was stunned to hold a colored pencil for the time in her life. Upon scribbling with the pencil, she was exhilarated! She could now create whatever she wanted to see instead of letting the heaps of rags control her! “The new classroom isn’t that bad”, she thought as she started to color her first picture.
In a week’s time she even got a hang of Madhubani art. The best part was that could get her paintings back home and show her mother.
Kumar wondered what kept his little angel so animated. When her mother proudly said that she was going to join government school that summer, he was furious. They had agreed that Saki would help earn her dowry by working at households. Saki joined in the argument now, by chance. Kumar had never seen his daughter calm and composed. He paused to hear what the changed child had to say. Saki promised that she would earn for herself, not working in a household but as a teacher! Even though Kumar was poor, he was a good man and wanted the best for his children. He saw in Saki’s eyes, conviction; the conviction to change, to challenge all status-quo and become something better in life. Her spirit and conviction was so strong that it inspired him to put on his entrepreneur cap to start his own venture.
Subsequently, Kumar opened his own Pani-puri outlet and started making money for his family. Saki on the other hand made the entire family and community proud by topping in the government school!
Kumar’s pride and excitement knew no bounds seeing the laurels his daughter brought on to the family. He was curious to know the name of the school that brought around this paradigm shift in their lives.
That’s when Saki chuckled and said: “Protsahan pa, it’s called Protsahan”

To a Special June....

June is a special month. It marks the completion of half a year. It also marks the beginning of the other half of the year.

An interlude between beginnings and ends, that’s the beauty of June.

Have you met our June at Protsahan? A tiny girl with two pony tails and a smile that can make your heart melt in seconds.

June is a warm month; just like our girl who oozes warmth and affection that makes you look within and wonder, “Is it so easy to love people?”

She lost her parents as a toddler and reminisces old times with a spark that tugs your heart leaving it with an emotion that can’t be put into words. She understands the importance of memories and capturing moments in a way we don’t. Perhaps, she values memories in a way we all need to.

And! Her love for getting photographed is a different story altogether. Show her a camera and she’d pose for you till you get tired of clicking pictures. A photographer’s delight.

June is suffering an incurable disease and her health is deteriorating with each passing day. Despite all odds, this little soul breathes every moment with a zest for life that would leave you dumb struck.

Her hug, her smile and her gleeful squeals are priceless.

Would you like to make this special month for our special girl? Would you like to be a part of this world where expressions and affection get a new meaning?

This June, let’s raise a toast to the colors added into the world by our little June.

This June- To a special June.

She taught us how to love....

Suman, She can’t speak or hear.

Suman can’t speak or hear but she can feel.
The world might revolve around you, you can be at the grandest of places, adhere to all the agreed and benchmarked success quotients of the society but if you don’t feel right, it’s all in vain. You might be in a situation perceived pitiful by outsiders, but if you feel right, it’s worth exchanging all the bench marked success quotients for that feeling.

When we got Suman to Protsahan, she couldn't respond to numbers and alphabets the conventional way. She was different you see.We wanted to bring real solutions to real people and not just whacky creative ones. Our team brainstormed to come up with something that could change her perception of the world forever. Finally, we decided to do a workshop on “Coffee on Warli”. Huge paintings and drawings were made with coffee powder. The aroma of wafting from the drawings awakened her senses and her response was overwhelming! Every time she squeaked with delight , it was a moment of gratitude for Protsahan. We realized, in this world, your senses- your feelings-your happiness are ALL THAT REALLY MATTERS. Rest is secondary.

Suman ‘soaks-in moments’ and her joy reflects in her actions. She has infinite love to share. She can’t talk or hear, but her soul can ‘listen’ and her eyes can ‘communicate’. She doesn’t judge, she doesn’t analyze or fret over opinions, she only senses the vibes around and responds. She loves people without questions and treats them with respect. Without preaching or saying anything, Suman teaches priceless lessons.

Protsahan, gave her confidence and self-expression. But she gave us much more than that, she epitomizes the power of vibrations and miracles of love. She teaches us to love. Thank you little one, for you taught us more than we taught you. You taught us "How to Love".

Some other happy faces from the Workshop :)

Activating Empathy at Schools

“Yes. I am passing days fighting my emotions everyday. Yes, I’m a warrior of self created blindfolds. Yes, I’m trying to find my way. Yes, I’m tired of thinking and trying to make the best out of my life. Maybe, I’ve forgotten the importance of feelings, the importance of emotions and the importance of human relationships. Maybe…Just Maybe”
In today's fast paced world, children are made to learn numbers and theories while adults lead a life devoid of real moments to treasure. Life is turning into a rat race with humanity losing meaning.

It’s not just the marginalised sections and under privileged sections we look past with cold-disturbing ignorance but even our own peers sometimes. Are we losing the essence of living? Are we getting choked in the rut of existing dogmas and views? Are we losing the race of life in the endeavour to win the race of our egos and green paper?

Maybe we are. Maybe we need to connect back to our soul. Maybe we need to strongly reach out and awaken emotions like love and empathy within our selves. Maybe…

If maybe is "to be", we pro-actively need to create an environment of positivity and growth, a healthy approach towards respecting human freedom while preserving indispensable foundations like "understanding people and their emotions", helping others gain foothold and live a life of dignity, encourage and enthuse the zest for living into disheartened souls. Yes. The importance of empathy needs to be recognised and built upon. This has to be activated in primary levels at schools and need to grow onto colleges and organizations with the due importance it deserves.
At Protsahan, we work for street children and commercial sex workers/ sexually abused/drug abused children. We started with ART and COLORS and LOVE. Curricula only came later. That is the exact very reason how Protsahan has been able to touch a cord across the world, with volunteers and organizations alike.

Sonal, Founder CEO, PROTSAHAN India Foundation says, "Empathy in school curricula should be as important as Algebra or subject verb agreements. Else what are we trying to give our children? Rote education? Who scores how much on percentile terms/grades? Creativity cannot be forced when pressures of getting 97.854567% makes one get admitted or rejected in "colleges of repute". Creativity will happen with open minds, with empathy, with respect for differences."

"One time at Protsahan, we got two special girl children who could not speak or hear, and had never been to a school. It was difficult to get them straight to numbers and alphabets. We did a 'Coffee on Warli' workshop. We made huge paintings and drawings with "coffee powder". They couldn't listen or speak, but they could smell the aroma wafting from their drawings. We’ve never seen them as excited about things ever. Empathy can do wonders. This is empathy."

Ashoka is launching a global initiative to ensure that children master empathy, enabling them to be effective citizens, leaders and trailblazers.

Protsahan India Foundation is partnering with Ashoka Changemakers in this initiative. To be a part of this contest, enter nominate and spread the word.

Its Valentines Day.Show Love!

It’s Valentines Day!

A day dedicated to what we believe is the strongest emotion in the world and makes it go round.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrong things. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails. - Corinthians 13:4- 8a

These lines if read through carefully have depth and meaning that can be an answer to most problems in life. At Protsahan, we see love and encouragement changing our little kids ‘everyday’. We document the power of faith injecting life into children who have suffered and lived in pain.

Suraj: The first day we saw him, he was highly drugged and created a ruckus at the school. We took his hand and made him realize that he’s not alone. If he turned up drugged and drunk even after promising to quit, we forgave him and our volunteers affectionately encouraged him to get over his habit. Today, he’s excited about life and we can see the metamorphosis clearly. All the street dogs are his best buddies. For unlike humans, animals ask no questions, pass no judgments. They just love.Suraj loves Radhi. Thats what he calls her :)

Julie, when we met her was a rebellious child who was often left teary eyed at the thought of her mother not wanting her. When the team held her hand, hugged her and gave her all the warmth they had to offer, the sense of belongingness sparked a brand new side of her. She now has a bunch of friends to share with and care for. Julie is a new warm little girl who has friends; she loves colors, she loves to paint and she loves painting with people. She has knowingly/unknowingly understood the importance of not keeping a record of wrong things and letting go of past sorrows for new beginnings.

We see children evolving at Protsahan everyday reinforcing our faith in the magic of unadulterated love. Love, that puts together virtues of patience, kindness, humility and trust.

That one day when a protective child ran and stood up to protect a volunteer, “Meri Didi hai yeh”. We knew, love protects and perseveres.

Here’s a day dedicated to this one emotion that connects the world!

Join us in celebrating Valentines day at PVR VIKASPURI school followed by cake cutting, yummy chocolates and sharing red balloons as a symbol of love.

Happy Valentines Day! Show Love .Say Aye!

Parents and Education

My mother is a teacher. Who’s mother isn’t? The basic foundation of every child’s learning starts with Mom! Abhimanyu was a genius even before he took birth! It might be mythology but has mysterious truth to it. Why do some babies just ooze that spark since birth?
I can vouch for the glaring truth in my being that I derive my strength from my parents and their support. Every time my plans in life seem dubious, their   presence acts like a truss that keeps me from falling apart. Don’t most of us feel the same way?
Our kids at PROTSAHAN are a testimony to the role parents play in a child’s life and how imperative it is for them to catalyze their off springs education. It begins in the womb and goes beyond it. The connection and intensity of this relationship is such that literacy can be proliferated by parents into the society through their child who adopts it unconsciously (and also the most effectively).
Have you met Anju and Khusboo? (On facebook we mean!!).They’re the Protsahan Art sisters. Their mother encourages and emboldens them SO MUCH that they have gained a skill for life - Madhubani art work!!! Check out their work and drop in a comment. They’ll love to hear from you. And don’t forget to put in a line for their mother as well! It's a full circle, the more you aid the nurturing of their parents, the more the kids shine!
Oh and did we miss our star Soni? She went to study at a local government school and subsequently got promoted into it. Her parents motivate and promote education in their little rising stars life and witness her evolve with new found pride. Look what they’ve moulded! A beautiful child who has come such a long way from rag picking…..She can now write her name, express herself and exude confidence that shows even in her pictures.

The roots of our organization lie in “individual growth”. Parents need to be recognized and acknowledged for their irreplaceable contribution to a child’s literacy (not in terms of just knowledge, but values, character and strength)
There are many people in slums, who’re unaware of the marvels of erudition and prefer to push their brood into petty labour since their early years. This in turn makes their base so weak that they grow into individuals without any real learning’s, their outlook and vision becomes confined to the streets of their slums and they remain unstable financially in the long run. As these children grow up, most of them turn into rigid adults without any inspiration for a wholesome life. The vicious cycle continues. This phenomenon of churning out thwarted adults who pass on the unsolicited legacy needs to be broken. They need to be empowered and lead out of this misery to ensure the future generations flourish.
Our “Empowerment cell” strives at doing exactly that!

Julie’s mother, who was once disgruntled and aloof about the opportunities an educated society can create, is today a role model at our cell. There was a time when Julie had tears of sorrow for not having her mothers support and today ‘they’ are encouraging us to reach out to many more. These candles made by Julie’s mother have lit up many rooms in addition to the one’s that are lit up our girls smile!
As we record history here, kudos to those wonderful parents who cultivate gems that shine and inspire many others. Such parents imbibe morals and erudition in their children in a way to “truly educate and empower them”!
Here’s an ode to all such wonderful parents and the personas they create!
AYE! To you and the magical lives you create!

TIME TO LEAD CHANGE

Image

How many times have you looked at the streets and felt sad or angry about the dismal state of  beggars?

How many times have you exclaimed, “Poor thing!” OR just rolled up the windows in exasperation?

How many times have you blamed the country, the politicians, the mafia or “anyone” for the prevailing issues?
It’s a fact that the economic gap, the growing discrepancies between evolving and degrading sections is so stark that it can be labeled as alarming now. While a small portion is growing wealthier, another section of the society is depleting with each passing day. Be it the distinction between nations on a global level or the class distinction in a country. The only change seems to be a dismaying width between the fortunate and less fortunate and the only way to cope up with this situation is respond with change to these changes!

We have envisioned a way to do our bit, to hold some hands and to realize dreams for the less fortunate. We think Socio-Economic growth is the need of the hour! We hope to bridge the gap through our distinct way.
Well! You may say all this talking is easy but implementation is a challenge, the hurdles on the way are so many that the efforts go futile. We agree with you on the challenges faced by change-makers. True! Out of hundred initiatives, only a few foundations are strong enough to build into institutions with time. Our focus here is on such success stories; these stories are like beacons that guide us and are an unending supply of encouragement to strive at what we deeply believe in.

Teach for All, an organization that internationally supports local entrepreneurs who wish to start independent, locally-governed organizations, founded in 2007 has spread all over the world within 5 years of its inception! RARE, an organization involved with sensitizing the need for preservation of the environment has witnessed remarkable success in years. Did we miss something? These organizations thrive primarily on their own funds along with the some support. Initiatives by people of courage who took up a cause passionately, nurtured it through their efforts and unique approach of impact investing. Unlike other NGO’s, they gave people a skill to catch fish instead of fishing it out for them. We stump for this approach because it lionizes individual growth which in turn elevates the entire community to a higher level.

We do not believe in mere philanthropy or what we call charity without a heart. We believe in promoting self sustainability and competitive growth. Unleashing potential untapped talent and giving it a chance to shine, to polish unnoticed opportunities and help them metamorphose into budding self reliant models. Reaching the grass roots of the slums and catalyzing evolution right from the beginning, developing the bottom of the pyramid with a vision to raise the standard of living on a larger scale. Are you able to visualize the big picture with us?

Our kids want support not just sympathy. They want a chance to live a better life, to contribute to the building of a better society. We want you to be a part of this initiative and help in the transformation.
‘Now’, is the time to lead the change….With Protsahan!

When Colours heal fears ! PROTSAHAN’S Wall Project

"Remember those times, when you splashed buckets of rang chasing your friends and ran infinitely across streets just to take ‘the Gulal revenge’ on your sibling! What frolic and gaiety times they were… We definitely cherish our childhood and always yearned for our children at Protsahan to have wonderful memories of this colorful festival, Holi”

Protsahan’s children were thrilled when they got to know ‘didi’s and bhaiya’s’ (Accenture’s employees) will be marching down to their little school in Uttam Nagar on last Saturday evening (26th March 2011) with white charts, paints and lots of energy – to re-play Holi, the creative way. Thus started the idea of Great Wall Project Saturdays at Protsahan.

Together with the children, volunteers painted the classroom walls green and red, blue and yellow. Protsahan’s children unleashed their creative instincts, let hues chant the slogans of jubilance and saw the colors go swoosh on their walls! Children went wild with imagination and started painting parrots, yatches, bright yellow suns and not to forget the hand-marks.

What more, some children manifested the idea of “green art” using pencil scraps as a canvass to portray their thoughts; this got us to wonder how young and pure yet so conscious they were. We had the rare opportunity to glimpse at beautiful Madhubani paintings, perfect and so intricate. Protsahan had conducted Madhubani workshops sometime ago and the team was exhilarated to see their little ones learn a deal great from these sessions.

Saturday’s are always full of surprises, and to be honest we’ve never seen wider smiles on our children when they look at colors. We are much honored to have Accenture amongst us today. We saw Chhoti paint her heart out, she one of those kids who hardly speaks, she is a shy child who comes from troubled back-ground. Poonam, the yatch painter (see attached pictures) wanted to become a sailor one day. Kiran stood proud of her master-piece parrot with big wings!. The Accenture employees were so supportive and enthusiastic. In the end, they were smiling as much as our little Piccasoes!

Indeed, colors heal fears and bring much more than just smiles. The dream and infinite hope with which Protsahan had started 12 months ago has been transformed into a remarkable initiative thanks to such projects.

To the next generation, to Protsahan!

Story Telling Festival

Life will go on as long as there is someone to sing, to dance, to tell stories and to listen.

Protsahan believes in educating the children of the world through stories. Triggered by that thought Protsahan celebrates an ongoing, neverending Storestival..yes a festival that celebrates the art of story telling with street kids. We have used puppets, props, champaks, stages, music, laptops to spin creative yarns and yarns of meaningful stories. The impact has been tremendous. The morals & learnings spread out have reached every child's soul. Once every month, we celebrate a Storestival Day at Protsahan. Using Panchtantra stories, Aesop's Fables, we try and bring change through the art of story telling to every kid's heart. Storytelling is one of those few things that has been common to almost all civilizations. Whether in the form of a sprawling epic or a pointed ballad, the story is our most ancient method of making sense out of experience and of preserving the past. It needs no perfection, just the enthusiasm of interaction with the listeners. Crossword Stores have also supported Protsahan in this initiative!

Isnt it amazing if children, as little girls of eight-nine, could sit down and write their stories, they could escape the parts of life they didn't like, embroider the parts they did and thus control the life they had! Infact...think for a moment. Are each of our lives any different from 'mini stories'? Souls that take up bodies, experience a million mini stories of lifetimes and conclude...only to begin with another story.

Volunteer with Protsahan at Delhi. Or simply tell a story to your maid's little one. Even if 'that' spirit of learning and teaching is garnered with the youth today, Team Protsahan will be happy to know, the storytelling movement of bringing change is spreading. Write to us at ngo.protsahan@gmail.com. Contact us at +91-9540781011.

Get connected on Facebook.  Next time around, do you wish to spin a yarn with our children at Storestival? Come, let us know your favorite story :)
